Sometimes the best family memories happen when you throw out the plan entirely. This weekend, we decided to ditch the screens, pile into the car, and head toward the Washington coast for a spontaneous family adventure. Since moving to the Pacific Northwest from California, I've been curious about how Washington beaches compare to the beaches I grew up visiting.

As a California native, I'm used to beach days filled with sunshine, warm sand, and long afternoons by the water. I had heard Washington's coast was completely different, and after our first trip to Ocean Shores, I can confidently say that it is. Different, however, isn't a bad thing at all.

Ocean Shores offered a rugged beauty, a slower pace, and a peaceful atmosphere that made us fall in love with it almost immediately. Here's a look at what we did, what we loved, and what we'll do differently next time.

Making the Day More Meaningful

Because this trip was completely spontaneous, I wanted to bring along something different than our usual beach toys and snacks.

Before we left, I created a simple printable beach adventure worksheet for my son. The best part is that he doesn't have to complete it while we're there. Instead, we can bring it home and fill it out together later.

Not only does it encourage reflection and conversation, but it also helps us relive the highlights of the day over dinner or during quiet moments at home. Sometimes, when kids have a difficult moment during an outing, looking back on the positive memories can help shift the focus away from the meltdown and toward all the fun they had.

It's become one of my favorite ways to preserve family memories without adding pressure to the experience itself.

What We Did

After arriving in Ocean Shores, we headed straight for the beach. One of the first things we noticed was how different it felt from California beaches. The weather was much cooler, the wind was strong, and the atmosphere felt wild and untamed. Despite the chilly temperatures, everyone was eager to explore.

One unique feature of Ocean Shores is that vehicles are allowed on certain sections of the beach, which made it easy to explore different areas and find our own quiet spot.

We spent the afternoon:

  • Walking along the shoreline

  • Searching for shells and interesting rocks

  • Watching the waves roll in from the warmth of the car

  • Taking family photos

  • Letting our son run, dig, and explore the sand

  • Enjoying the freedom that comes with having absolutely no schedule

One of the best parts of the entire trip was simply being present. There was nowhere we needed to be and nothing we had to accomplish. We were able to slow down, enjoy the moment, and spend uninterrupted time together as a family.

What We Loved

The Open Space

One thing we immediately noticed was how much room there was to spread out. Unlike many crowded beaches, Ocean Shores felt open and peaceful. There was plenty of space for children to run freely and safely while still feeling connected to nature.

As we explored, we discovered beautiful driftwood structures scattered throughout the beach. Some were simple artistic displays, while others had been transformed into elaborate forts and creative works of art.

Watching people contribute to these structures reminded me how creativity can bring communities together. It's a wonderful opportunity for children to use their imagination, work together, and leave something beautiful behind for others to enjoy.

The Natural Beauty

Photos simply don't capture how peaceful Ocean Shores feels in person. The sound of crashing waves, the salty ocean air, endless stretches of beach, and dramatic coastal scenery create an atmosphere that immediately slows you down.

Coming from California, I expected a beach experience centered around sunshine and swimming. Instead, I discovered something entirely different. There was a quieter, more reflective kind of beauty.

The town itself felt relaxed and welcoming. We enjoyed fresh seafood, explored local shops, and appreciated the laid-back pace that seems to define the entire area.

Family Connection

Sometimes the simplest experiences create the most meaningful memories. Watching our son discover new things, collecting treasures from the shoreline, sharing laughs, and simply spending uninterrupted time together reminded us that connection doesn't require elaborate plans.

Some of our favorite family moments happen when we leave room for spontaneity.

What We'd Do Differently Next Time

Even though we had an amazing day, we learned a few valuable lessons that we'll definitely remember for future visits.

Pack More Layers

This was probably our biggest surprise. When we left home, the weather was warm and sunny. Naturally, I assumed the coast would feel similar. Growing up in California, warmer inland temperatures often meant a pleasant beach day. Washington's coast taught me otherwise.

Even on a beautiful day, the ocean breeze can be surprisingly cold and windy. Next time we'll be bringing jackets, sweatshirts, blankets, and extra layers for everyone.

Pack More Snacks

Is it just me, or do kids become twice as hungry whenever they're outdoors?

Even though I packed lunch and snacks, everything disappeared much faster than expected. Between the drive, beach exploring, and all the fresh air, everyone seemed hungry all day long.

Next time we'll definitely be packing more food than we think we'll need.

Stay Longer

This was probably our biggest takeaway.

Just as we started settling into the relaxed rhythm of the coast, it was already time to head home. We left wishing we had a few more hours to explore and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Next time, we're planning to make a full day of it. We'll be packing extra blankets so we can stay cozy while watching the waves from the bed of our truck, along with more sand toys for building and exploring on the beach. We're also planning to bring a few family-friendly games that can be played right on the sand or from the comfort of our beach setup.

One thing we've quickly learned about Washington beaches is that they aren't always about swimming or sunbathing like many California beach days. Instead, they're perfect for slowing down, getting comfortable, and enjoying quality time together while taking in the incredible scenery. The more prepared we are, the longer we'll be able to relax and enjoy everything Ocean Shores has to offer.

Looking Ahead

By the time we were driving home, we were already talking about our next visit.

Ocean Shores gave us exactly what we needed: fresh air, beautiful scenery, quality family time, and a chance to slow down together. It also provided endless opportunities for our son to explore nature, ask questions, and discover the world around him through curiosity and play.

Next month, we're planning an overnight stay so we can experience even more of what this beautiful coastal town has to offer.

Stay tuned for Part Two of our Ocean Shores adventures!
