Some of my favorite childhood memories involve the small ways my mom made the holidays fun. Every holiday, she would decorate the kitchen table and surprise us with little themed gifts. These weren't big, extravagant presents, but small holiday trinkets and treats that made the day feel special. My brother and I absolutely loved these surprises.
I remember waking up on holiday mornings excited to see what was waiting for me. It wasn't about the value of what was inside but more about the feeling. The excitement. The thoughtfulness. The sense that this day was different from every other day.
Now that I'm a mom, I find myself wanting to recreate those same feelings for my own children. Over the years, I've realized that traditions don't have to be complicated to become meaningful. Sometimes the smallest gestures are the ones our children remember most.
One tradition I've come to love is putting together themed holiday baskets. They're simple, affordable, and a fun way to build excitement around each season. Whether it's Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween, Christmas, or the Fourth of July, I enjoy finding little items that encourage creativity and family time. It's also a wonderful way to remind your kids that you're thinking of them and to make an ordinary day feel a little more magical.
This year, I put together a Fourth of July basket filled with festive goodies, outdoor activities, and a few fun surprises to help us celebrate the holiday weekend. The kids are going to be so excited to dig through everything!
If you're looking for an easy way to create lasting memories with your children, here are some of the items I included in our Fourth of July basket, along with a few other ideas that would make great additions. Links included!
What's Inside Our Fourth of July Basket
Patriotic Sunglasses
Nothing says Fourth of July quite like a pair of red, white, and blue sunglasses. These are always a fun addition because the kids can wear them to parades, barbecues, fireworks shows, or even just while playing outside.

No holiday basket feels complete without a few festive treats! I love adding red, white, and blue snacks that fit the theme and bring a little extra excitement. You can include either patriotic candy or some red, white, and blue fruit snacks for a healthier option. They're a fun little surprise and always one of the first things my kids reach for when they open their baskets.

Themed Fourth of July Cups
One thing I always try to include in our holiday baskets is something that can be used throughout the celebration. This year, I found festive Fourth of July cups that are both fun and practical. Whether they're filled with lemonade, fruit punch, or a festive mocktail, they add an extra touch of holiday spirit to the day. Plus, the kids love having their own special cup for the occasion.

Summer activity books

Frisbee
Beach toys
Patriotic hair bows

Why I Love This Tradition
The older my children get, the more I realize that the things they'll remember most won't be the expensive gifts or perfectly planned celebrations. More often than not, it's the little things that leave the biggest impression. Like the excitement of discovering a surprise waiting for them, the joy of feeling thought of, and the simple moments spent together as a family.
My kids don't need grand gestures to feel special. Sometimes all it takes is a small basket filled with thoughtful surprises to brighten their day and make them feel loved. Seeing their excitement reminds me that creating memories isn't about how much we spend; it's about the love and intention behind it.
As parents, it's easy to feel pressure to do more and make every holiday picture-perfect. But some of the most meaningful traditions are often the simplest. A small holiday basket can create excitement, encourage family connection, and become something your children look forward to year after year. Long after the toys and treats are gone, it's the feeling of being loved and celebrated that they'll remember most.
Creating Your Own Holiday Magic
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a collection of happy memories and traditions they can carry with them into adulthood. Looking back, I don't remember every item my mom put on the table for us. What I remember is how loved it made me feel and how exciting holiday’s felt.
Now, I hope to give my children that same feeling.
These holiday baskets may seem simple, but they're becoming part of our family's story. They're a reminder to create moments worth remembering.
And if years from now my kids look back on these baskets with the same smile I have when I think about my mom's holiday surprises, then every bit of effort will have been worth it.
